The most common cause of delay in a personal loan application is incomplete documentation. The lender requests a payslip that was not uploaded, a bank statement that does not cover the right period, or an SA302 that was not to hand. Each follow-up adds one to three working days. Having everything ready before starting the application eliminates this delay and gives the fastest route from application to funds.
This checklist generates a tailored list of documents based on employment type. The items shown are commonly requested by UK personal loan providers. Individual lenders may ask for more or fewer depending on their own criteria. Treat the list as comprehensive preparation, not a universal requirement. This tool is for informational purposes and does not constitute financial advice.

Select your employment type. The checklist tailors the income evidence section to your specific situation: payslips for employed, SA302s for self-employed, pension statements for retired.
Six employment types are covered: employed (full or part time), self-employed sole trader, limited company director, contractor or CIS, retired, and receiving benefits. Each produces a different set of income evidence requirements alongside the universal items (photo ID, proof of address, bank statements) that every application needs.

Tick items off as you gather them. The progress bar tracks how far through the list you are.
Each item can be ticked when the document is located, scanned or photographed, and ready to upload. The progress bar fills as items are checked. When all items are ticked, a confirmation message appears. The goal is 100% before the application is started, not during it.

Having documents ready before applying is the single biggest factor in a fast application. It can reduce the timeline from days to hours.
A complete set of documents means the lender can verify identity, income, and affordability without requesting follow-ups. For employed applicants with a clean credit file, this can produce same-day approval. For self-employed applicants, it can reduce the timeline from a week to two or three working days. The guide to how long a personal loan takes covers the full timeline by lender type.

About this checklist
Whether it is a first application or a refinance, having documents ready eliminates the most common cause of delay: the lender requesting something that was not uploaded with the application.
Six employment types produce six different lists. The universal items (ID, address, bank statements) are always included. The income evidence section changes to match the specific documentation that type of employment requires.
A complete set of documents means the lender can process the application without pausing for follow-ups. For employed applicants, this can mean same-day approval. For self-employed, it can halve the timeline. The guide to how long a personal loan takes covers the impact.
Requirements vary by lender. This checklist covers what is commonly requested. Some lenders ask for less (particularly online lenders with automated verification). Some ask for more (particularly for self-employed or larger amounts).
How to use this checklist
Click the pill that matches your current employment status. If you have multiple income sources (for example, part-time employed and receiving benefits), select the primary income type. You may need items from both lists.
For each item, locate the document, check it is current (within the required date range), and scan or photograph it ready for upload. Tick the item when it is ready. The progress bar fills as you go.
Ensure the name on every document matches exactly: the same spelling, the same format. Ensure addresses match the address on the application. Ensure bank statements and payslips cover the most recent period, not older months. Mismatches and outdated documents are the most common follow-up triggers.
Once all items are ticked, the documents are ready and the application can proceed with the best chance of a clean, fast process. The guide to how to apply for a personal loan covers the full application sequence.
Preparing the documents: practical tips
Scanning or photographing documents for upload requires a clear, complete image where all text is legible. Most lenders accept colour photographs taken on a smartphone, provided the full document is visible, the image is not blurred, and the text is readable. Cropped images, images with fingers covering text, or images taken at an angle that distorts the text are the most common reasons a document is rejected and a re-upload requested.
For bank statements, most lenders accept PDF downloads from online banking. These are typically cleaner than photographed paper statements and include the account holder name, sort code, and account number on every page. If the lender requests paper statements, ensure each page is scanned individually and in order. If income is received into multiple accounts, statements for all relevant accounts may be needed.
For self-employed applicants, SA302 tax calculations can be downloaded from the HMRC personal tax account (gov.uk) as PDFs. The tax year overview is a separate document from the same portal. Both are needed: the SA302 shows the income, and the tax year overview confirms that the figures match what HMRC holds. Accountant-prepared versions of the SA302 are also accepted by most lenders, but the HMRC version is the most universally recognised. The guide to personal loans for self-employed borrowers covers the full documentation requirements by business structure.
Why document preparation affects the timeline
A personal loan application moves through three stages: identity verification, income verification, and affordability assessment. At each stage, the lender checks the submitted documents against its own records and the credit file. If a document is missing, unclear, or does not match, the application pauses and a follow-up request is sent to the applicant. Each follow-up adds one to three working days, because the applicant needs to locate, scan, and upload the document, and the lender needs to receive and review it.
For a straightforward employed applicant with all documents ready, the three stages can be completed within hours at an online lender with automated processes. For the same applicant with a missing payslip, the application pauses at income verification and resumes one to three days later. For a self-employed applicant missing an SA302, the pause may be longer because the document needs to be downloaded from HMRC or requested from an accountant.
The checklist eliminates the most common follow-up triggers by ensuring the documents are ready before the application starts. The guide to how long a personal loan takes covers the full timeline by lender type and employment status.

Do all lenders require the same documents?
No. Requirements vary by lender. Some online lenders with automated verification (through open banking and payroll data access) may not request any documents at all for straightforward employed applicants. Others request the full set listed in this checklist. Self-employed applications almost always require SA302s and bank statements, regardless of the lender. The checklist covers what is commonly requested across the market, which means preparing these items covers most scenarios.
If a lender requests a document not on this list (for example, a reference from an accountant, or a specific utility bill rather than a bank statement for address proof), providing it promptly is the priority. The checklist reduces the probability of a follow-up but cannot eliminate it entirely, because lender-specific requirements vary.
What if I cannot find my SA302?
SA302 tax calculations can be downloaded from the HMRC personal tax account at gov.uk. Log in, navigate to the self-assessment section, and the SA302 and tax year overview are available as downloadable PDFs for recent tax years. If the self-assessment was filed by an accountant, the accountant can also provide the SA302 or a version calculated from the filed return.
If the most recent tax year has not yet been filed (common in the months following the end of the tax year), some lenders will accept the previous year’s SA302 or interim accounts prepared by an accountant. The availability of the SA302 depends on the filing date, so filing the return promptly after the tax year ends ensures the document is available when needed.
Are photographed documents acceptable or do I need scans?
Most lenders accept clear colour photographs taken on a smartphone. The key requirements are: the full document is visible in the frame, the text is legible (not blurred, not obscured by shadows or fingers), the image is well-lit, and the document is not at an extreme angle. PDF downloads from online banking or HMRC are generally preferred over photographs because they are cleaner and more consistently legible.
If the lender rejects an uploaded image, the most common reasons are: the image is cropped (part of the document is missing), the text is blurred, the file size is too large (some upload portals have a limit), or the document is expired (for example, a bank statement older than three months). Re-photographing with better lighting and a stable surface resolves most issues.
How recent do the documents need to be?
Proof of address must typically be dated within the last three months. Bank statements must cover the most recent three months (some lenders ask for six months for self-employed applicants). Payslips must be the three most recent consecutive months. SA302s must cover the most recent filed tax year (and ideally the year before). Photo ID must be in date (not expired). Pension statements must show the current payment amount.
The most common mistake is uploading documents from the correct period that are one month too old. If the application is submitted in March, the lender expects bank statements covering December to February (or January to March), not November to January. Downloading fresh statements from online banking on the day of application ensures they are as current as possible.
What if I have multiple income sources?
If income comes from multiple sources (for example, part-time employment and self-employment, or employment and benefits), the lender may need documentation for each source. Select the primary income type in this checklist to see the main requirements, then check the list for the secondary type as well. For example, a borrower who works part-time and receives Universal Credit would need payslips (from the employed list) and a benefit award letter (from the benefits list).
Lenders that accept multiple income sources typically aggregate them for the affordability assessment, but each source needs to be verified separately. Having documentation for all income sources ready avoids the lender having to request evidence for a secondary source after the application has been submitted, which is one of the more common follow-up triggers for borrowers with complex income structures.
Squaring Up
The document checklist is the simplest tool in the personal loans toolkit, and one of the most practically useful. Having the right documents ready before applying eliminates the most common cause of delay: follow-up requests from the lender. Select the employment type, work through the list, tick each item when it is located and ready to upload, and apply when the progress bar reaches 100%. The checklist covers what is commonly requested. Individual lenders may ask for more or fewer items, but a 100% completion on this list covers most scenarios across the market.
